MOBILITY 2.
Aspects of Teaching English. Brighton, the UK. Laura Borràs. Day 2
Evidence Based Teaching
The session starts with the observation of a sample History class which
follows the following structure:
1. Warmer: grouping activity
2. Lesson overview: cuisenaire rods are used to draw the map of
England
3. Elicit established learning: Norman invasion
4. T input: The Story of Norman Invasion
5. Groups retell using visuals
6. Ss swap notes and are corrected by other team
7. T introduces other outcomes
8 S draw a mindmap
9 Review and close
In the second part, the theory behind it is analysed
evidence based practice vs custom and practice
it refers to a huge body of evidence
standard deviation, not percentage, is used for statistical
purposes
a method with effect size 0,5 = a one grade leap (from C to B, for
example)
a method with effect size 1 = a two grade leap (from C to A, for
example)
Research evidence proves that the most effective elements and
their scores are:
1. Graphical representations (mindmaps, diagrams, ...) 1,24
2. Teacher feedback (Medal and Mission) 1,13
3. Note making (not taking) 0,99
4. Whole class interactive teaching 0,81
5. Review 0,75
6. Relevant recall questions 0,93/0,69
7. Peer assessment 0,63
8. Co-operative learning 0,59
9. Challenging goals 0,54
10. Problem solving 0,52
11. Advance organizer (stating your aims) 0,46
12. Computer assisted teaching 0,36
13. Class size (above or below 12 is relevant) 0,13
