Listening A. Real-life listening 1. Gotchya coin! S A tells B about a topic of their choice. They have a coin on their palm. B tries to get their coin. Swap when coin is taken. Ask what they remember about their partner’s story. 2. Mirroring A is the mirror and follows B’s movements simultaneously. Swap after a minute or two.   3. Tell me more about A speaks about a topic of their choice and B interrupts saying: Tell me more about … + something they heard from A 3. 2 mins – 1 min A speaks about a topic of their choice and B only listens to them. Then they summarise in one minute. A gives feedback on summary. Swap. 4. So what you’re saying is …. Speaks about a topic of their choice and B keeps clarifying. How many clarifications did they ask for in 3mins?

Art and literature   Art gallery  Spread pictures. Each pair gets three post-it notes. They choose three pictures and write comments people seeing the picture in an art gallery may say. Comments are collected and redistributed and then matched with pictures.   Preference corners Put pictures on both walls of all the four corners. Ss go to the corner where they like the pictures the most. They tell each why. They find another picture they all like. What if? Ss look at a picture and write ‘what if’ questions in groups or pairs. Then groups or pairs swap questions and answer them. They give the answers to those who wrote the questions and they choose the answer they like the most and read it out as one sentences, not as a Q+A. What’s the title? Exhibit pictures with numbers attached to them. Ss in pairs walk around and give titles to pictures. Pairs swap and compare titles. Similar? Different? Drama:  Make your students create language using theatre as a fine tool. What a fine comedy this world would be if one did not play a part in it. Getting to know each other - there is no better way to know your classmates than playing some games. Name ball game Form a circle. Throw the ball and say your name. » Throw the ball and say the name of the person you throw the ball to » Throw the ball and say two names: 1. the name of the person you throw the ball to 2. the next person the ball should go to. ABC names Ss group themselves acc or ding to the first letter of their first names. Then they collect w or ds starting with the same letter. The w or ds should mean things that they find imp or tant, or characteristic of themselves. Then they introduce their group with the names and characteristic w or ds. Follow on: someone silently says the ABC. Another says stop, and gets the letter from the person. Then the class puts down as many names from the class as they can remember starting in the same letter. SONGS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM Choose 8/9 words from a list and write them in a grid (it may be suggested that they all write one in the middle). Listen and stand up whenever they hear the word OR play Bingo.  Work with pictures: brainstorm words from pictures and put them in order as they hear the words in the song + pick the nouns in the chorus and what's the verb that goes with them (Bruno Mars Grenade ) Put pieces in order or battle for the pieces. Work with homophones. Work with the story of a song or teach some history / culture, e.g. Ed Sheeran's Nancy Mulligan,  http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/troubles . WRITING ACTIVITIES Dictogloss: 1. Read at normal speed and no writing 2. Read at normal speed and write the key words 3. Read at normal speed and write the missing words 4. In pairs: fill in spaces we didn't hear 5. Read again and make sure students got it word for word. Stories: in groups students continue a story the teacher gives them + move stories around, expand a piece of news (each group of students writes a paragraph which focuses on a different aspect). Register: formal vs standard language nowadays, punctuation, words from Latin origin vs Anglo-saxon words Writing short texts: 1. Give students magazines 2. Specific page at random and students choose a block of text 3. Go to the 7th word and write a sentence with the word 4. Read all sentences and students have to create a text with all the sentences 3. REVISION. The trainer prepared a set of handouts to review the new vocabulary we have learnt in this course. include visual stimulus in the revision activities prepare all sorts of activities to meet the students' different needs provide context SHARING IDEAS. SHOW AND TELL. The teachers in the class present to the other teachers an activity, resource or idea that they use in class and works. These are some of the ideas: the chain reaction: each student gets an instruction with a conditional sentence, e.g. STUDENT 1: if a student claps his/her hands, stand on your chair. STUDENT 2: If a student stands on a chair, shout your name out loud.... Speak out: students role play a 1st time kind of conversation, e.g. on a train. Each one of them has a sentence that you wouldn't normally use in this kind of conversation, e.g. I think my husband is having an affair.
